Obtaining your Medical Marijuana License

Now that you have your doctor's recommendation, it's time to apply with the state for your medical marijuana license, otherwise called a 'red card'.

You have to fill out an application where you will declare what your primary source(s) of medicine will be:

  • Medical Marijuana Center (MMC):
    • Denver Relief and other MMC's are storefront businesses regulated by the Medical Marijuana Enforcement Division (MMED) of the Colorado Department of Revenue. Regulation of everything from infused product kitchens to cultivation facilities is done by the MMED.
    • MMC's generally offer a wide variety of cannabis medicine with an assortment of ingestion methods, and some, like Denver Relief, offer discounts to members.
  • Private caregiver
    • A caregiver will generally be someone you have a personal relationship with who is capable of providing a consistent supply of medicine. Keep in mind that many localities have special laws governing caregivers. Consult with your city or county government to determine what those laws are.
  • Self
    • Even if you don't name a provider, you can still shop at medical marijuana centers. If you don't fill out information for a MMC or caregiver, it is assumed you will be your own provider.

Do doctors who recommend marijuana need extra training? Maryland reps. say ‘Yes’

There is a persistent sentiment that medical marijuana is only appropriate for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, or for geriatric care, but evidence suggests medicinal possibilities for marijuana extend far beyond this narrow-minded approach. Maryland legislators propose moving forward with the state’s medical marijuana program, but would require doctors wishing to recommend marijuana undergo special training and approval. This is an attempt to prevent a certain type of medical cannabis user from gaining access; by creating a short list of approved doctors with narrow views of who qualifies for medical marijuana treatment.
